Rules about coordinating health and/or dental benefits:
- Coordination of plans ensures you are reimbursed up to 100% of eligible costs.
- Claims should be submitted to the employee’s plan first. So if you are covered as an employee under the BCCA Employee Benefit Trust plan, submit your claims through your employer’s plan. After you’ve been reimbursed, submit the remainder of the expense to your spouse’s plan (if you weren’t reimbursed 100% of the cost). Be sure to keep copies of your receipts.
- Your spouse must always submit their own claims to their plan first. Any percentage not reimbursed can then be submitted to your plan.
- Claims for dependent children are first submitted to the plan of the parent whose birthday comes first in the calendar year. Once the first insurer has reimbursed the member, claims can be submitted to the other parent’s plan.
